What Makes a Great Apprentice
Leaving school can feel like a relief but we know that it can be hard knowing what is expected of you now you have left school and are starting an Apprenticeship.
Commitment
Employers want to hire people who come across as committed not only to the business but also to their own personal development and learning. You need to show an employer that you really want to succeed on the Apprenticeship that they are offering. It may not be in your contract but showing that you care about the job more than just turning up and going home will show the employer that you want to work for them and you are working hard for your future. This will make you stand out from the crowd and hopefully make you an invaluable employee.
Enthusiasm
We love to have people around us who build us up, bring new ideas and are willing to play their part and it is the same with employers. Employers love enthusiasm because it means that you are enjoying your job and putting the most you can into it. There may be some areas of the job that you enjoy more than others but having an enthusiasm for all of them will insure that people intrust you with the more exciting tasks in the future.
Research
You will learn on site and complete theory however taking an outside interest in you sector will mean that you have extra knowledge which will help you to progress faster, also, it's good to do this to progress your career and interest in the sector.
Confidence
There is a difference between confidence and thinking you know it all. Confidence is having the confidence to ask questions when you are unsure, make friends with colleagues, talk to clients, make phone calls, travel, give presentations and just enjoy yourself. Everyone is at least a little nervous when they start a new job and remember everyone there was new once.
Ideas, Ideas, Ideas
Just because you are an 'apprentice' doesn't mean that you can't have great ideas that could contribute to the businesses success. You might think of a market that they aren't targeting to its fullest potential, find out about a resource that would increase profitability or help them to understand how to connect with a younger generation via social media and the internet.
Finally,
Remember that you have a lot to give to the business as well as a lot to learn, so, enjoy the experience to the full!
